Project Potty Cat suffered its first major setback last night. We were three successful days into phase two, which means the cats were using the toilet with a full litter box insert. Sadly, one of the cats decided to be polite and lowered the toilet seat cover…or perhaps I did in my sleep. In any event, plan b turned out to be my brand new love seat.

As the saying goes, you can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs…Or perhaps when life gives you lemons…Ah…Never mind. I can probably clean the cushion cover. The important thing is there was no drama…Jackie and I both took it in stride, cleaned up the mess and went on with our morning. In order to prevent this particular problem from reoccurring I used packing tape to secure the toilet seat cover. If that doesn’t work because of condensation…I will just remove it.

Other than this issue things are going well. Hopefully we will get right back on track. I can’t wait to be done with kitty litter forever!

CIMG0047I’m taking a break from all this project management stuff to highlight major milestone at the 491. This week we started training the cats to use the toilet. I am simply done cleaning litter. Well…Almost done. I ordered this kit called CitiKitty – “The World Famous Cat Toilet Training Kit”. The kit retailed for about $29 on their web site so I figure if it doesn’t work it will be worth that much in entertainment value alone. However, I am optimistic it will be easier for me to teach cats to use the toilet than it was for my mother to teach me.

The first step is to get the cats used to using the bathroom so I moved their litter box in there. This phase will last about a week, then we start using the training inserts which will essentially turn the toilet into a litter box. I’m not really sure how this is going to work with Jackie and I also needing to use the facilities and having only one bathroom but I think it’s going to involve me removing the insert whenever either of us has to go.

So far the cats are complying with the change in routine without issue. Beta has always been really curious about the sink when I am brushing my teeth…perhaps I can teach him to wash his paws too?
